Carl Jung viewed the 7 operative stages of inner alchemy as a symbolic map for individuation—the psychological process of integrating the conscious and unconscious mind to achieve wholeness.

1. Calcination (Fire): The ego is broken down by the "fire" of suffering and life experiences. It is about burning away rigid attachments, limiting perspectives, and the illusion of control in order to clear the slate for true transformation.

2. Dissolution (Water): The ego dissolves further in the "waters" of the unconscious. This is a stage of emotional release where you confront repressed feelings, grief, and the chaos of your shadow self.

Dream Example – You are in your house and suddenly notice that the floors are flooded and rising.

3. Separation (Air): Being able to separate and identify different parts of the psyche that were previously repressed or entangled with other parts. This process allows one to truly come to know oneself which is essential for inner transformation.

Dream Example – Moving out on your own from your family house or separating some food or other objects into different groups.

4. Conjunction (Earth): The integration of opposing forces—such as conscious and unconscious, or masculine (animus) and feminine (anima) aspects. This forms a unified wholeness.

Dream Example – Uniting in sex, pregnancy and giving birth are the most common symbols showing conjunction within the psyche or Soul.

5. Fermentation (Putrefaction): The process of death and rebirth. Aspects of the old Self must "rot" away or breakdown so that new spiritual growth can take place.

Dream Example – You discover a rotting corpse or animal.

6. Distillation: Purification of the psyche or Soul. This stage shows the evolution or raising of consciousness. You gain clarity and emotional maturity, viewing your life from a broader, more considered perspective.

Dream Example – Ascending a mountain or stairs.

7. Coagulation: Shows real inner transformation has taken place. The alchemical dictum solve et coagula (dissolve and coagulate) serves as a framework for the continuous breaking down of outdated beliefs and the subsequent crystallisation (coagulation) of newfound wisdom and identity.
