Extraordinary Dream States
Far more people experience extraordinary dream states than most people realise. Extraordinary dream states include the following dreaming phenomena:
Lucid Dreaming
Astral Projection
OBE’s – Out Of Body Experiences
Remote Viewing
Waking Dreams/Visions
Precognitions Dreams, Premonition Dreams, Prophetic Dreams
Synchronicities
Before I briefly describe these powerful dream states and phenomena, it is important to state that Spiritual Psychology, and in particular Jungian Psychology, includes these dream states as a natural expression of the human psyche. This is important to clarify here because as powerful as these dream states can be to experience, they can often cause a sense of isolation or psychological disorientation for the person involved. This is in part because the modern world overall does not acknowledge many of these dream states, and even worse, many view such states with scepticism or even as a symptom of mental illness. When working with individuals experiencing these dream states, we work through how these states are actually possible and then we start on working on the most important task; why are they personally experiencing these extraordinary dream states? For people experiencing these extraordinary dream states, I offer a free Introductory Session using Zoom where we can discuss own experiences and you can ask any questions you may have regarding my work with people who are experiencing these powerful dream states.
Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming is a dreaming state where you become aware (conscious) that you are dreaming while the dream is still being experienced. This allows the dreamer to gain conscious awareness without waking up. This awareness potentially gives the dreamer the ability to control, direct, or alter the plot and environment of the dream.
Astral Projection
Astral projection or astral travelling, is an intentional out-of-body experience where an individual's consciousness (or "astral body") separates from their physical body to travel independently. The Soul/Psyche then has the potential to explore the physical world or alternate dimensions, often guided in a meditative state or occurring during sleep. From a Spiritual Psychology perspective, we see astral projection as a transpersonal experience with great potential for expanding consciousness.
OBE’s - Out Of Body Experiences
An out of body experience (OBE) is a phenomenon where a person feels as though their consciousness or "self" has temporarily detached from their physical body. During this dreaming state, individuals often perceive the world, including their own physical form, from a location outside of their body, such as floating above it.
In my many years of working with people who have Out Of Body Experiences, I find that there are 2 main reasons that trigger these events. The first reason in very much to do with someone’s own spiritual journey because OBE’s can be a powerful transpersonal experience. The second trigger can be based around past trauma. If the out of body experience is accompanied with fear and anxiety, then it is much more likely to be connected with past trauma. If this is the case then the trauma can be worked through and then the out of body experiences will then stop. Please see my page on Nightmares and Dream Encounters With Darkness for more information.
Waking Dreams And Visions
Waking dreams/visions, or hypnagogic hallucinations, are vivid, dream-like visual, auditory, or sensory experiences that occur while a person is transitioning between wakefulness and sleep. Waking dreams/visions feel incredibly realistic, often blurring the line between imagination and reality, and can involve seeing dreamscape realities, hearing voices, or feeling sensations like floating.
Precognition Dreams, Premonition Dreams, Prophetic Dreams
Precognition dreams, Premonition dreams, Prophetic dreams are vivid, often emotionally intense dream experiences that can accurately predict or reveal information about future events before they occur. Unlike symbolic dreams, these are potentially direct glimpses of future realities—such as seeing a specific location or event that occurs at some point in the future.
Synchronicity
From a Jungian Psychology perspective, a synchronicity is a meaningful coincidence between an internal psychic state (such as a dream, thought, or feeling) and an external event, which are not linked by cause-and-effect. These occurrences, such as dreaming of a person you haven’t spoken to for a long time and then getting a phone call from them soon after, often are experienced with a ‘numinous’ affect and indicate an underlying, deeper unity between the human psyche and this material world.
Synchronicities are deeply connected to the principle in Hermetics and Alchemy - “As Above, So Below”. This requires knowledge of the important principle of the macrocosm and the microcosm - the understanding that the universe (the macrocosm, or the heavens) and the individual/earthly existence (the microcosm) are deeply connected and mirror one another.
